GREECE

Island hopping, ancient masterpieces, vibrant nightlife

Greece is located in the southeastern region of Europe on the end of the Balkan Peninsula. Often referred to as the “cradle of western civilization”, this country has over 200 inhabited islands with ancient ruins, incredible food and thrill-seeking activities. Travelers should plan on a minimum of 7 days in this beautiful country.

Things To Do

1. Island Hopping

Each one of the islands in Greece is distinct and offers travelers a unique experience. Who wouldn’t want to experience the beaches of Naxos, the spectacular scenery of Santorini and the nightlife of Mykonos all in one vacation? The islands are divided into 6 main groups and it is suggested that you plan your itinerary within each grouping. 25 of the inhabited islands have airports offering direct flights and ferries provide another way to get from one island to another. Island hopping tours are available if you would prefer to have a guide.

2. Acropolis of Athens

Encounter the ancient ruins of the Acropolis in Athens. The Acropolis is the famous hill that gives a foundation to ruins preserved for 25 centuries such as the Parthenon. As the birthplace of philosophy and democracy, this historical landmark is the epitome of Greek culture. Once home to kings, a citadel, a mythical home of the gods and a place of worship, the Acropolis is now a must-see attraction.

3. Meteora

This incredible rock formation dates back to the 11th century and hosts one of the world’s largest monastery complexes. The six active monasteries are built on natural pillars and encountering them is like stepping into a scene from Avatar. These primordial structures are responsible for the preservation of Hellenic culture and since have drawn our deepest thinkers, artists and poets.

Best Food & Drink

1. Moussaka

Talk about comfort food! This casserole is made of eggplant and ground meat, which is traditionally lamb, and flavored with tomatoes, onions and cinnamon. After the dish is smothered in a bechamel sauce it can be served with fresh vegetables and crusty bread. Moussaka is widely known as the most popular dish in Greece.

2. Souvlaki

Souvlaki is tender grilled pork, chicken or lamb served on a skewer with rice. This quick meal is readily found at most sidewalk stalls and casual restaurants. Vegetarian souvlaki is also available.

3. Loukoumades

You can find Loukoumades, a donut-like treat, found around every corner in the main cities of Greece. These fried doughy morsels are flavored with honey and cinnamon. With a history dating back to the first Olympics in 776 BC there is nothing new about this sweet invention.

Ways To Visit

1. Air Travel

The vast majority of visitors arrive in Greece by airplane. Greece has four major airports that serve Athens, Crete, Thessaloniki and Rhodes.

2. Train

Another option is taking a train from a surrounding European country and experiencing the journey at a more leisurely pace.

3. Water Ferry

Ferries from Italy to Turkey take about two days but offer sites you would not normally see in a brisk train ride or flight. Advanced reservations are recommended.
